Hayward RC9990 TigerShark Quick Clean 110-Volt/24-VDC Robotic Pool Cleaner Review

Hayward RC9990 TigerShark Quick Clean 110-Volt/24-VDC Robotic Pool CleanerWe bought this unit about 3 years ago from Specialty pool products. My husband wanted to replace another unit we had that worked off the pump and this unit is independent. The plus sides -- it works independently so you don't lose a skimmer like with you do with other models. You put the unit into the pool and there are two options for cleaning, a full cycle and a "quick clean."You use the cycle dependent upon how dirty the pool is.This unit cleans very easily and it really works great. If you have a lot of algae in the pool it will not climb the sides of the pool, it will simply slide down.

Here's the down side with a vinyl pool and we found out the hard way:if you do not have a heavy gauge pool liner this unit can pick up a pebble and drill it right through your liner.A year ago we had to replace our liner.I had a customer of ours order a liner.I did not know they came in various gauges and thought he ordered us the best product out there. We went ahead and replaced the liner.Right before a holiday my husband and his friend were cleaning up around the pool and took our backpack blower and blew off the walks around the pool.Sometime while doing that a rock must have been blown into the pool.I threw the pool cleaner in the next day and within 5 hours after taking it out the pool was low on water. The leakfinder guy we hired to find the leak said this is commonplace with a lot of pool vacuums. He rattled off several names but I can't remember which ones he spoke as being notorious for picking up debris and continually spinning it around until it cuts the liners. He explained that we had a thinner liner than we should have and it will make it more susceptible to holes. When I called the guy who sold me this unit he told me no one had ever called him with this problem.Just another case of a salesman not backing what he sells.

So there are the pluses and minuses.I make sure in the spring that I hand vacuum the pool several times before I put this unit in.And - if we have several people going in and out of the pool and hand vacuum the next time it needs it to make sure nothing got tracked in on feet.

Hayward DC900 Sunray In Ground Pool Disc Cleaner Review

Hayward DC900 Sunray In Ground Pool Disc CleanerI reviewed this product under DC-200, it's the same thing (as far as I can tell)...

Disclaimer:I purchased this item from an online pool store, not Amazon - probably due to the lack of any reviews (positive or negative) on Amazon.

This unit ships in a large box.The hose segments are probably three feet in length. The hose length is probably adequate for most home pools.Assembly is quick and easy and with any basic knowledge of your pool, you can conceivably be using it in a matter of 10 minutes from delivery. The directions are very basic, include a lot of illustration, and very little in terms of descriptions of parts and troubleshooting. I purchased it about 3 months ago and still remember being confused with how to use the "pressure regulator". Again, there are pictures to show you how to do it, but little in terms of what it's designed to do and how it can help you.I tend to learn by seeing an entire system and how the parts of a system interact - and there was none of this included in the manual or the Haywardnet.com site.

As for operation, it has one pendulum-like swivel inside that flickers from front to back, creating momentum that moves it along while keeping suction from the pump.I frequently have to flick the swivel to start the motion.Once moving, the pendulum freely moves. There are two "handles" on the top and bottom of the body, one has a blue moving thing (called the float in the directions) - but no matter where I place it, it just slides to the bottom of the handle. I think its purpose is to balance the unit and help it move, but I don't know what it does because the directions didn't illustrate that. The website doesn't help either.

It doesn't get up the walls like the ads say.It does a great job of cleaning the deep side.It rarely, if ever, makes it to the steps and the shallow side even though there is plenty of hose to get there.

In fact, it frequently gets stuck on the suction grate at the bottom of the pool. I have to get the cleaning brush to nudge it off. I have to push it far away, or the until will steer right back to it.That's pretty frustrating.

I looked at the "troubleshooting" portion of the manual - it tells me to fix or adjust parts, but these are not actually labeled anywhere on the directions.

Also, I have one black rubber fitting that came from the box, but is never mentioned or illustrated in the directions.Unsure what it does...

Pros
good entry level pricing
probably would work well for most pools because it is a simple unit
hose length is good for most home pools
minimal moving parts - a huge plus from what I hear from owners of other makes/models
where it does clean, it cleans very well

Cons
directions don't adequately describe how the cleaner works as part of the system of the pool
directions don't address a frustrating problem, how to get the unit to stop parking on the grate at the bottom
directions for troubleshooting include names of parts which are not actually labeled in the directions(i.e.Flow deflector) or parts labeled are never mentioned in the directions (i.e. float)
Admission: When I bought this, I was new to owning a pool. It's possible that resolving my problem is just one trick away - and that an experienced pool owner would know these things. But I think that validates my issue - specifically that the manual and help resources are not adequate for simple, out of box operation.

Baracuda W69698 Long Life Pool Cleaner Diaphragm for G3 Review

Baracuda W69698 Long Life Pool Cleaner Diaphragm for G3A Baracuda G3 pool cleaner was installed in my pool in April of this year (2009).
During the six and a half months since that time the deceptively named "Long Life" diaphragm, which is essential to the functioning of the Baracuda, has had to be replacement two times.
Online research has turned up a great many users' complaints about this issue. The biggest part of the problem is that the diaphragm costs, at minimum, over twenty dollars. At this rate it could cost over a hundred dollars annually just to keep the thing running.

The Baracuda itself (which is a very effective piece of equipment when it's working) costs hundreds of dollars. The manufacturer should, at the very least, bundle half a dozen of the diaphragms in with the item and warn potential buyers of their vulnerability. An alternative MIGHT be to make the thing out of a more durable material.

I'm not holding my breath until that happens!

Zodiac Baracuda G4 InGround Swimming Pool Cleaner New! Review

Zodiac Baracuda G4 InGround Swimming Pool Cleaner NewI did a lot of research on a pool cleaner and bought this. It was a big mistake. You have to have the pressure on the intake just the perfect amount for the temperature of the pool to get it to work. With filters and pool lines, they are never the same pressure so it quits working. It gets caught in corners and on stairs. Also the hoses get "memory" twisted.I look out my back window constantly seeing my expensive Barracuda just sitting there while the neighbors have a beautiful pool with a cheaper cleaner just making laps around their pool.

Polaris G52 Vac-Sweep Replacement Back-Up Pool Valve Kit for 180/280/380/3900/480 Review

Polaris G52 Vac-Sweep Replacement Back-Up Pool Valve Kit for 180/280/380/3900/480My old back-up valve started leaking from a deteriorated seal in the exhaust port. I wanted to purchase a new seal and fix it myself. Guess what? You can't buy a seal which would only cost about a dollar (at most). You have to buy the entire unit for about 50 dollars. Without any other options, I purchased the entire valve, which, by the way, works like a champ.

Swimline 8040 Professional Heavy Duty Deep-Bag Pool Rake, Blue Review

Swimline 8040 Professional Heavy Duty Deep-Bag Pool Rake, BlueI had previously bought several leaf nets from local stores to clear leaves from my swimming pool and they all kept breaking. I have a large oak tree overhanging my swimming pool. So the nets get used a lot.

I found this net on Amazon. It was much cheaper than any other net I had bought previously and it was available on Amazon Prime. It arrived in 2 days. I have now used it for a year and it works like it is brand new.

It is solidly constructed and it lasts. I am very pleased with this product.

Dolphin Diagnostic Robatic Pool Cleaner Residential Review

Dolphin Diagnostic Robatic Pool Cleaner ResidentialI purchased my Dolphin Diagnostic four years ago at our local Leslie's. I had a Kreepy Krauly which worked fairly well but, since my pool has only one skimmer inlet, the surface wouldn't get adequately skimmed when the KK was being used (even with the KK skimmer plate which allowed for some skimming while vacuuming). While we don't have many trees in West Texas, any that are shed seem to end up in my pool ;-)

I have been completely satisfied with the Dolphin. In the four years I have owned it I have needed only two repairs -- the first about 2 years ago was done under warranty and required sending the Dolphin to a repair station. This winter my Dolphin stopped moving and I tracked (pun intended) the problem to a worn drive track. I was able to fix this myself after ordering the correct parts.

While not having many trees, West Texas does have a lot of dust and wind. Prior to the Dolphin it was a battle to keep the pool clean but now it remains sparkling. I don't know why the previous two reviewers have had such problems, but mine covers the entire pool without difficulty. You do need to pay attention to the flow in the pool since that can affect the Dolphin's cleaning pattern. I tend to run it at least every other day throughout the year since we don't close our pool for the winter.

I've noticed two fringe benefits to the Dolphin. First, the agitation from the upward stream from the pump (especially when it is at the top of its climb of a wall) helps move surface debris and the skimmer is more effective. Second, since the collection bag microfilters the water, I only have to backwash my filter about one tenth as often as previously. This saves time, work, water, and chemicals.

Four years ago I paid about $850 for the Dolphin. This is my 5th season of use. Amortized at less than $200 per year this has been a great investment for me. My only regret is not having spent the extra money for the model with remote control. Sometimes there is an area - usually at the shallow end - that I want to clean first.

O.K., you do have to clean the bag but that is not much of a chore. I just dump the debris in the trash and then spray the bag with a hose to remove the dirt. Actually, there are disposable bags available and I did purchase some to use in the winter but they are rather expensive so I prefer the bag cleaning route.

I have recommended the Dolphin to friends and I would buy another.

Aquabot ABTTJET Turbo T Jet Robotic In-Ground Pool Cleaner Review

Aquabot ABTTJET Turbo T Jet Robotic In-Ground Pool CleanerWith so many things to maintain for a pool already, the last thing I want to do is to maintain an automatic pool cleaner. If I have to replace belts, tracks, booster pumps, and so on, then I might as well spend that time with an old fashioned pole vacuum instead. Before I bought this T-Jet I had a tough time deciding between the Polaris series, T-Jet, and the Turbo T2 model.

I ended up buying the T-Jet because of the simplicity with so few moving parts that can break.I'm happy with the decision. The T-Jet cleans the pool crystal clear. But to get the best performance, first I had to make some adjustments to the setup out of the box.So here are some tips.

The settings on the T-Jet when it first arrives are for impressing you with the speed in which the water jets propel it across the pool - to maximize the water flow but not maximizing the cleaning potential. The changes I made were the following: 1. snap on the intake extender so that the suction port is closer to the pool surface, 2. slide the internal tab to narrow the intake slightly for more suction power, and 3. add two of the foam squares to the inside for more neutral bouyancy.

By increasing the bouyancy with the included foam pieces, the T-Jet more easily jets up the curve from deep to shallow.I also found that by increasing the lap time from 30s to 40-60s (max 90s) this gives it enough time to make the length of the pool (rather than just the width) before it reverses direction.

I read one review where someone said their T-Jet flipped upside down sometimes.I don't understand that because what I observed is that even when I push it around with my hand it wants to stay upright, and the floating power cord keeps vertical tension on it to keep it oriented correctly.I think that must have been user error.

Lately I just drop it in the pool once every few days and let it run all day long, or overnight.I was surprised how much dirt gets collected in the fine filter bag because the pool already looked clean but the filtering is really effective.I can run the main pump less so the DE filter doesn't have to work as much; I noticed that the PSI gauge doesn't increase as fast when I use the T-Jet.So it saves on electricity, since the T-Jet uses a fraction of the electricity as the main pump.

The only negative I found (and this is pretty minor compared to all the positives) is that the cord tends to get twisted up if I leave it in the pool for several days in a row.I have to remove it anyway to rinse out the filter bag. Then I untwist the cord.

I am happy that I bought this instead of the Turbo T2.I don't think the track models like the Turbo T2 can do anything better than this one, at least for my pool.I think those just have more moving parts to maintain.

Update 1/9/2010: I found out why people report sometimes that it stops climbing the wall. Those user-replaceable foam buoyancy squares on the bottom plate soak up water and wear out over time.Just replace them or add some more, takes 10 minutes. When mine wouldn't climb the wall as high anymore I inserted some more styrofoam squares from a shipping box.Now it climbs all the way up again. With this pool cleaner it is important to maintain the neutral buoyancy.

Polaris Vac-Sweep 380 F3 Pressure Side Automatic Pool Cleaner for In-Ground Pools Review

Polaris Vac-Sweep 380 F3 Pressure Side Automatic Pool Cleaner for In-Ground PoolsThis is a test
I can't compare the Polaris 380 with other cleaners, but try Googling as follows:

Polaris 380 forum

,where you will find divers pertinent input (no pun intended), eg:

[...]

Having maintained a large in-ground plunge for the better part of a decade, however, I can confirm unequivocally that the Swimming-Pool Establishment employs very few rocket scientists. The 380 system doesn't perform as well as one might hope and with a very limited warranty is expensive and hard to repair; while your friendly local service establishment might not provide much help in this respect.

In the first place, the path of the Vac-Sweep unit isn't sufficiently random, following a somewhat repetitious path and often leaving a single large patch of debris on the bottom. This problem can be dealt with by everyday shifting the position of the thrust jet, a nuisance at best; while there doesn't seem to be an optimum position for best coverage.

For example, my steps are at the shallow end of the pool. But if I set the jet to a high position in order to encourage climbing, the Sweep will spend almost all its time at the deep end.Polaris would do well to emulate other makes of pool sweepers which include a mechanism to slowly rotate this jet and thereby encourage a less predictable route.

Furthermore owing to its geometry being intended more for styling than performance, it is reluctant to climb steps and platforms, leaving their surfaces for its owner to sweep manually-every day just before your afternoon splash. The main problem seems to be the geometry of the frame, bugling out in front of the wheels, especially the single-side wheel. Thus when it encounters a curved surface such as the edge of a platform or step, it can't climb because the two wheels can't engage the obstacle simultaneously.Instead it makes repeated thrusts like the adolescent puppy attempting to hump your pantleg, without however gaining any elevation, until finally the backup valve pulls it away. Clearly the Vac-Sweep should have been built with four wheels instead of three, the two front ones projecting well below and in front of the frame. Also it might have helped if the unit had been made more narrow in width so as to better navigate the steps.

You can deal with the foregoing problem by adding a second tire to the single-side wheel, so as to project a fraction of an inch beyond the front, thereby improving the chance of traction. But you will have first to stretch the new tire, a requirement entailing Herculean effort. Also it helps if you acquire two additional feed-hose floats, mounting them as near as feasible to the Sweep so as to enhance buoyancy.More than one or two floats so situated, however, significantly diminish its traction when the Sweep is at the bottom.

Performance may be improved somewhat by removing the wall-fitting pressure restrictor, thereby increasing the power and range of the Sweep (Incidentally, this mod may increase wheel speed beyond the specified 28 rpm, which we suppose could shorten the life of the system). In addition, when I replaced the booster pump, the new one proved noticeably more powerful.

Used without restrictor, however, increased gyration of the backup system can occasionally so tangle up your feed hose as to temporarily disable the entire system until you untangle it.So if you also encounter this result, I suggest you think twice about letting it run during a weekend getaway.

Even with the increased thrust, though, the Sweep may not reach the far end of your pool because it can't overcome a loop or two in the feed hose. This could be due to reduced traction as suggested above, exacerbated by the float (its bouyancy discouraging it from being nudged below the surface and the effect of friction of its bulge above the surface); to reduced flow owing to aging of the motorpump, or even something as subtle as the season; for it isn't entirely unreasonable to guess that if you use your system in the winter as I do, the reduced water temperature stiffens the hose beyond its ability to untangle.

My contact with the Polaris folk suggests they had been working on a scheme to eliminate the floats but apparently they were unsuccessful because that was several years ago and I haven't heard from them since.

The Sweep itself is also covered by a 12-year guarantee. But after 2 years when it begins to wear out, you're chagrined to learn that the warranty covers neither internal parts nor labor. You will not enjoy replacing the belts.

A minor annoyance with the filter bag:The Velcro means by which the bag is opened soon becomes hopelessly entangled with debris and eventually won't stay closed. Therefore never open it.After just a few attempts you will find it fairly easy to empty by shaking out its contents.

Unless you're really determined and just plain good at it, you'll find the sweeper system difficult to repair as many parts don't fit together right or can easily be interchanged unintentionally. For instance there are at least a dozen permutations and combinations of such ways in which the parts of your auxiliary booster pump can be misassembled, not just by amateurs like you and me but even by the trained technician during a repair job.

The pump subassembly fails by throwing water from its top seal.(Even if you're able to dismount it yourself, the cost of repair is well over $100 and so you might resolve to learn how to do it yourself). The motor is water-cooled through the motor axle so if a slight amount of air enters the system (for example, if the pump is reassembled incorrectly, if water level drops below skimmer port, or if a small crack should develop in the plumbing), or you experience unusually high air temperature on a still day (which we do experience here in California's High Desert), it quickly overheats, shortening if not ending its life, at a replacement cost over $300.

So at risk of oxidization, I've installed a supplementary cooling system comprising weeper-soaker hose wrapped around the housing and fed under pressure. However, don't do this yourself if you're concerned that its corrosive effects might void your warranty. But if you're interested, I am dalehileman@verizon.net and I'd be glad to elucidate in more detail.

Owing to the complexity of this auxiliary system, including an elaborate Sweep full of small parts, the booster pump with its overtemperature breaker, pressure restrictors, an overpressure relief valve, 70 ft. of tubing, and an intricate backup valve containing dozens of gears, its susceptibility to malfunction is so great that the unit cannot properly be tested by your friendly local repair facility unless they have an entire pool complex on their premises.Hence when you get it back, your repaired motorpump may still not work.

As I said, though, I can't compare its performance and reliability to that of other makes, while some users post Internet forum reports of great satisfaction and long life from the Polaris 380 System.

The unit cleans over 70 gallons of water per minute, and its filtration system picks up leaves, hair, dirt, dust, algae, and particles as small as two microns, reducing the run time of the pool's primary filtration system. The machine also circulates pool water, improving the distribution of chemicals and water temperatures. Best of all, there's no need for bulky hoses, booster pumps, suction lines, or installation. Simply plug the robot in, drop it in the pool, and let it go. Other highlights include an auto-reverse function to prevent hang-ups, a 60-foot floating power cord with a swivel cord detangler, and a durable ultra-lightweight design. The pool-cleaning robot measures 19 by 15-2/3 by 14-3/5 inches and carries a one-year warranty.

Polaris Vac-Sweep 360 F1 Pressure Side Automatic Pool Cleaner for In-Ground Pools, Blue Review

Polaris Vac-Sweep 360 F1 Pressure Side Automatic Pool Cleaner for In-Ground Pools, BlueThe Polaris 360 is a very clever mechanical device that works great 20% of the time.Because it is made of cheap plastic parts that constantly break, it is more often under repair than in service.Having owned one for about three years now, I can say I've spent twice the original cost on replacement parts and service (even though I do most of the service myself).Hose life is 6 months, and $19 for a 6 foot replacement hose (my hose is 18 feet long).I've bought two of these Polaris 360's used on Craigs list for $100 each to cannibalize for parts (replacement parts are outrageously expensive).

Until the manufacturer improves the quality to the point that they are willing to offer a 5 year guarantee, I would avoid this product. In fact, I'd avoid the manufacturer, too.

Aqua Products APRVJR Aquabot Pool Rover Jr. Robotic Above-Ground Pool Cleaner Review

Aqua Products APRVJR Aquabot Pool Rover Jr. Robotic Above-Ground Pool CleanerI've read the mixed reviews and wanted to share my experience with Rover. This is our second season with him, and I don't know what I would do with Rover. We bought him last year, first time pool/house owners and the pool was filled with algae and tons of stuff. Rover worked overtime, and got Everything out. Yes, his bag filled up, but the condition to the pool was not so good. We used him regularly and cleaned him after each use, following directions. We use to have a DE filter which broke and spit the powder all out in the pool.... yup Rover cleaned it all up for us. In the fall we had acorns all in the pool... yup again Rover picked up the big leaves and all the acorns, and I mean he had like 50 of them in his bag at a single time. It looked so funny emptying them out! But, he got the job done, with the solar cover even on top of the pool he works under it.

I find it great that you can just drop him in, set him to go, and come back in 2 hours and all done.... sooo easy! This year we opened our pool and once again Rover to the rescue for tree leaves and sticks and such from whatever storms we have had and normal debrie that falls into the pool. We have an above ground pool 18". His bag and the unit itself are in perfect condition. We had no problems with him at all, and again don't know what we would do with out one. If he ever broke I would not hesitate to buy again.

You bought a swimming pool to have fun - not to give yourself more work. Maybe you find yourself spending time cleaning the pool instead of swimming and enjoying it.Or maybe you bought one of those pool cleaners that work off your pool filtration system. Because your aboveground pool filtration system was only designed to filter your pool water and not to vacuum and clean your pool floor, you may have noticed that the filtration system doesn't do a very good job and requires constant cleaning.Besides, those bulky hoses get tangled; you've got to drag them out of storage, hook them up to the intake valve, and the cleaners tend to get stuck on the ladders, stairs, seams, drains and footprints. Hayward Standard Leaf Canister W560 Review

Hayward Standard Leaf Canister W560I love this leaf catcher. We have so many trees behind our property and the leaves all end up in our pool. Before when I vacuumed the leaves would have to go all through the pipes before getting caught in the filter basket and I would have to shut off the pump to empty it.Now I can leave the pump running and just remove the leaf cannister from the vacuum tube, dump the leaves then reattach it and continue vacuuming.

Floatron Natural Pool Cleaner Algae-free No chemicals Review

Floatron Natural Pool Cleaner Algae-free No chemicalsI have used this Floatron for over ten years in a twelve-foot aboveground pool in South New Jersey and am very satisfied with its performance.I just left it floating all the time, and it kept the water free of algae and turbidity to the point that I used chlorine only once in Spring after removing the winter tarp, and once more in late Fall before putting the pool cover back on and disconnecting the pump.In all those years, I had to replace the copper electrode twice, at $50.00 or so each time, but I guess chemical treatment would have cost more in money and maintenance time.

The only slight cons are that when my children were younger and practically lived in that pool during the swimming season, their blond hair seemed occasionally to get a slightly greenish tint, and some white T-shirts showed the same coloration, but it was slight and never bothered us.Also, the rubber bumper strip around the Floatron's circumference came loose and split, and I had to caulk it back into its groove.

Some of that old Floatron's photocells look discolored now, as if water had leaked into or around them, and last summer I had to use chlorine a couple of times to keep the water clear.I guess therefore that this Floatron has reached the end of its lifespan, and I am replacing it with a new one, but the old one has served us well and fully earned its retirement.

Product Description:
Purify your pool and cut chlorine usage by 80 percent at the same time with this solar-powered pool purifier from Floatron. No more bleached hair, itchy skin or red eyes, powered by solar energy, the pool purifier releases mineral ions that clean the water rather than nasty chemicals, so you enjoy swimming in the cleanest, softest water imaginable, without the unpleasant smell or taste of chlorine. Effectively cleaning pools up to 40,000 gallons, the purifier's advanced solar panels generate their own power, so there's no increase in the monthly electricity bill.
A low-maintenance pool purification system that reduces chlorine use by upwards of 80 percent, this completely safe and non-toxic purifier releases mineral ions into the water as it floats across swimming pools. While the mineral ions are absolutely harmless to you, they effectively halt the growth of algae and other microorganisms, making the water so clean that it falls within the EPA established drinking water standards. The unit is so safe that you can even swim with the unit operating in the pool without hampering the purification process or harming health.
Unlike chlorine, which quickly loses potency, the mineral ions remain effective for weeks without evaporating. Great for keeping water fresh in pools that are covered during the off-season; the purifier begins producing ions immediately after being placed in a pool with sun exposure. The unit produces ion levels sufficient for pool purification within two weeks (depending on pool volume). Completely safe, the unit's solar panels produce very little electrical current, so there's absolutely no potential for electric for optimal safety.
